- Let there be no doubt about it: The Breathless Agony Century Is One Tough Ride!!
If you've ever ridden it before, you probably wondered as you were in Breathless Agony:
How Steep Is This Road?
Where are the Steepest Parts?
Are there any places where I can really recover?
Where are the hottest parts of the course?
Where in the course is most of climbing?
During my training, what kinds of gradients do I need to climb to simulate those on the Breathless Agony?
Where is Damnation Alley? Does it really go on forever?
All of those questions and more are answered in great detail on the Breathless Agony Ride Page, -- just scroll down to the all new "Road Engineering Analysis Including Route Profile, Climbing Gradient Analysis and Photos For Each Climb" which is my "Road Engineering Analysis" based on my Ciclosport HAC4 Computer measurements on my handlebar of my worker's ride of June 12, 2003.
There are also a few of my favorite photos from the road. Including my favorite photo of "Where The Streets Have No Name".
See you at Onyx Summit at an elevation of 8,443 Feet on May 1, 2004!!

- Updated the Team Rules of the Road by:
-- Adding #1: Don't use Aero Bars while in a paceline. Aero Bars might be a great tool when you are riding solo or at the front of a paceline. However, if you are in the middle of a paceline, the time it takes to get from your Aero Bars to your brakes can be the deciding difference in whether you and those behind you have an accident or not. Keep your hands on your brakes or brake hoods while in a paceline.
-- Adding #4: When pulling off the front of a double wide paceline and coming back on the left of the paceline, MAKE SURE THE TRAFFIC IS CLEAR behind the group so that you are not pulling out into traffic. If you are in a single wide paceline, it is usually safer to pull off to the right of the paceline so that you are away from traffic.
-- Updating #5: You need to always be aware of what is in front of you, to the side of you and without looking back behind you.
-- Adding #11: Fixed Gear bikes don't descend, corner, or stop as fast as Freewheel bikes. When riding in pacelines with Fixed Gear bikes, give the Fixed Gear cyclist more room to descend, corner, or slow down. A group of cyclists on Fixed Gear bikes should ride together behind a group on Freewheel bikes so the Fixed Gear bikes can descend, corner, or stop at a different pace.

- The Breathless Agony 2002 Pass 3 Results were added.
A HUGE THANKS to Wendy Reynolds ... it's not easy driving a loaded van up on these curvey roads!! Wendy was in charge of Rest Stop 1 and 3 and we really appreciate her help!!
We'd like to really thank Jim Carter who helped us at Rest Stop 1 and 3 ... and drove his SUV as a SAG vehicle on the road. Jim is 71 Years Young ... but you wouldn't know it: Jim road all 4 Passes to the top at Onyx Summit in 1999 and did 3 Passes in 2000. Then he came out and really gave us a big hand this year. Thanks, Jim: You're an inspiration to all of us youngsters!!
- The Breathless Agony 2002 Pass 4 Results were added.
Peg Phillips did so much for the ride by leading Registration before the ride, handling Registration at the Ride Start, managing Rest Stop 2 and Rest Stop 4 ... we could have never done it without her incredible help this year so a BIG THANKS to Peg!!
We were amazed at the number of 4 Pass Finishers this year ... in 2000, there were 23 riders who made it to the top at Onyx Summit, in 2001, there were 36 and in 2002, there were 91 Riders who made it all the way to Onyx Summit!! What a difference a Cool Jersey makes!! Congratulations to everyone who made it!!
Special recognition goes out to the top 3 Women: Mavis Irwin, Lorraine Gersitz, and Kelley Swanno as well as the top 3 Men: Bob Davidson, Brian Bowling, and Vincent Tortorich!! These folks were flying up all of those climbs and a big congratulations to them.
A major tip of the hat to Dan Gorman and Doris Bingo who rode their tandem up all 4 Passes of this really tough ride. There has only been one other couple who have ridden their tandem all the way up to the top: In 2000, Michael Kantner and Laura Needels made it all the way to the top in 7:13. Dan and Doris completed it in 7:05 this year ... setting a new Tandem Course Record!!
A tip of the hat to the Veloce Santiago Team for their support of this most difficult ride ... there was a huge turnout this year and many, many Santiago Cyclists made it to THE TOP!! Congratulations!!
- The Breathless Agony Page was updated with the 2003 Date: May 3, 2003. This is the first Saturday of May again. The date has also been added to the Western States Bicycle Ride Calendar.
We hope to see you going for the top with us in 2003!!

In Part 1, check out 66 Photos from the party at Onyx Summit. In Part 2, check out 58 Photos from the continuing party at Onyx Summit right up to the end.

-- Photo #32 of some guy who was having way too much fun on such a brute of a climb.
-- Photo #39 of the Patterson Tandem Team ... you have to tip your hat to Doug and his son Steven to even consider tackling the Oak Glen Climb ... and they motored right up it. I think it was the cool stoker that Doug has!! :)
-- Photo #41 of Liv Peraza who the greatest smile from ear to ear.
-- Photo #51 of Marty Breen who was the rabbit off the front of the peloton ... the first up the Oak Glen climb!! Oh by the way, Marty is 59 years young ... absolutely amazing!!
-- Photo #65 showing Bob Davidson sucking Brian Bowling's wheel on the Oak Glen Climb. Just kidding ... certainly, you're not going to get too much draft on a 12% grade!!
-- Photo #81 of Dan Gorman and Doris Bingo motoring up the Oak Glen Climb on their tandem!! Unfortunately, they flatted right after this photo was taken but they were back on the road in no time even though it's mighty hard to get a tandem started on such a steep climb.
-- Photo #90 of The Shadow.
-- Photo #100 of the Patterson Tandem with the Stoker sticking his tongue at me.
All of you looked so good coming up this steep climb ... my hat is off to each of you.
I didn't mean to miss anyone ... those are just some of my favorites and I hope you find plenty of your favorites as well.

- On the Breathless Agony Ride Page, added a link to a new 2002 Redlands Bicycle Classic Page showing all kinds of interesting hot items:
Roland Green and Chris Horner on their way to a First Place and Second Place Finish making the Oak Glen climb look easy!!
A great photo of U.S. Postal Team Rider Tom Boonen smoking up the Oak Glen Climb. Just a few weeks after the photo was taken, Tom won 3rd Place in the 2002 Paris-Roubaix!!
Steffen Kjaergaard of U.S. Postal Service lead a pack up the STEEP Oak Glen Climb.
The U.S. Postal Team was out in force ... in fact, there are a couple of shots of Tom Boonen who would later ride to a 3rd Place finish in the 2002 Paris-Roubaix!!
Notice the close up of the rear cassette to see what kind of gears the pros bring to this Oak Glen climb.
You will also see photos of the end of the pro peloton tacking from one side of the road to the other in order to make it up this steep climb.
A great photo of Judith Arndt, Andrea Hannos, and Geevieve Jeanson who came in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd on the Women's Winner Podium.
Plenty of photos from the Men's Pro Race and the Women's Pro Race.
- On the Oak Glen Climb Detail Analysis Breathless Agony Ride page, added a link to the new 2002 Redlands Bicycle Classic Page and vica versa.
Also added the following great quote from Steve Brown of the Veloce Santiago Team, "In fact we all thought there were several very bizarre sections where your brain says you are on a flat or slight decline but your legs and lungs say you're climbing, kind of like the haunted shack at Knott's Berry Farm."

This climb is one of the toughest on the Redlands Bicycle Classic, an event that attracts professional teams from around the world. You will climb 1,690 Feet in 4.8 Miles for an Average Grade of 6.7%!! There are some pieces that are over 11.4% which will leave you Breathless for sure so bring your climbing gears!!
I also added links to Breathless Agony Accomodations for the Best Western Sandman Motel, Good Nite Inn Redlands, and Super 8 Motel Redlands. Links to Maps from these Motels to the Start / Finish were also added.
Links to Weather Forecasts from Weather.com were also added for Redlands, Beaumont, Angelus Oaks, and Big Bear Lake.
The address of Sylvan Park is 600 N. University St. in Redlands ... this was added to the Directions as well as the Links to Map Start according to Yahoo Maps.
All links were changed to open in a new web browser window.
I corrected a spelling error: Angeles Oaks should be Angelus Oaks so that was changed on all web pages including the Ride Profile.

-- Link to Outstanding Photos taken by Tom Lawrence from Team Bikeaholics. Tom used his Canon G1 Digital Camera and they really came out so clear it's just like being there!! Thanks to Tom for sharing these great photos.
-- Link to John Serafin's two photos taken with his Canon S110 Digital Camera. The second one of Hincapie and Johnson is awesome ... even showing their pedals in phase with perfect clarity!! It's almost like they are doing a track stand on Fillmore. The apparent grade is reduced by camera tilt.
-- Link to the great San Francisco Grand Prix web site
-- Link to the San Francisco Chronicle report "Armstrong exits, Grand Prix still thrills 175,000 watch along streets of San Francisco" along with 5 photos.
-- Link to Mike Maloney's photos from the San Francisco Chronicle. "Photos from Fillmore Street, with an average grade of 10%, topping off at 18%" Mike notes that riders climbed over 7,000 feet! I could really relate to: "On lap 10, the back of the pack were as criss-crossed as the overhead wires".

- On the Home Page, added a link to Sheldon Brown's Gear Calculator. This really cool calculating Web Page allows you to specify your Wheel Size, Crank Length, up to 3 Chainring Sizes, up to 10 Cog Sizes then quickly calculates any of the following for each gear combination in your drive train:
-- Gain Ratios
-- Gear Inches
-- Meters Developement
-- MPH @ 40 RPM
-- MPH @ 60 RPM
-- MPH @ 80 RPM
-- MPH @ 100 RPM
-- MPH @ 120 RPM
-- KPH @ 40, 60, 80, 100, or 120 RPM
A great tool!!
I looked at 6 different programs like this on the Internet and found Sheldon's to be one of the best because it can handle a Triple Chainring, 10 Cogs, and calculates the Miles Per Hour in any gear combination.
Sheldon Brown's Web Site is absolutely amazing so check it out while you're there.

May 6, 2001
- On the Breathless Agony Page , added over 150 Photos from the 2001 Breathless Agony -- Pass 1, Pass 2, Pass 3, and Pass 4!!
I arrived at Sylvan Park at 5:30 and could tell that this would be an outstanding day of cycling with an absolutely beautiful and crisp morning. Riders began to arrive shortly thereafter and registered. Each rider was given a cool pair of socks and a large Santiago Cycling Water Bottle.
The first rider started at 6:15 ... this is a key to a successful Breathless Agony ride: you need to get an early start to beat the heat which can develop in the Canyons of the climbs to Oak Glen and up from the Mill Creek Ranger Station. Most riders had started by 6;45. However, if you are a fast rider, we encourage you not to start until after 7:00 or later so you don't arrive at the Rest Stops before we can open them up!!
How hard is the Oak Glen climb? It's steep. Made worse by the row of trees to the side of the road ... trapping the heat into this section. Some beautiful photos from "Bramwell's Torture Clinic"!!
I know for a fact that this climb caused at least one engine to smoke out ... my Green Aerostar Van really didn't like it at all and ended up overheating big time!!
It was a beautiful day at Onyx Summit ... with temperatures at about 65 degrees!! Blue sky. Clean, crisp mountain air. Perfect!!
It was great fun to share the joy of these cyclists arrving at THE TOP!! These 90 photos show how great of a time it was at the Onyx Summit Party this year!!
At 12:40, Marc Patton and Mark Knudsen arrived. Last year, Marc set a Course Record with a time of 5:16. This year, they both started at 7:08 for an elapsed time of 5:32 ... and arrived at the top together!!
It was great to be able to be there with my camera before these guys arrived. Last year, Marc was way ahead of the camera and our Rest Stops he was going so fast!!
The first Woman, Annelie Chapman, arrived at 12:52!! She started with Marc Patton and Mark Knudsen and only lost 12 minutes on them for the entire distance of 74 Miles and over 10,500 Feet of Climbing!! Annelie really smoked the course: her elapsed time was 5:44!!
How good was Annelie's ride? AWESOME to say the least ... it was only last year when we had the first Woman ever to even make it to the top at Onyx Summit. In 2000, Audry Adler had a great ride and was the fastest Solo Woman with a time of 7:33. Laura Needels teamed up with Michael Kantner on their tandem last year with a time of 7:13. Annelie really took the bar WAY UP for the Women this year by beating Audry's time from last year by a whopping 1:49 .. One Hour and 49 Minutes!!! Congratulations to Annelie!!
We were amazed at the number of 4 Pass Finishers this year ... last year we had a total of 19 Official Finishers arriving at the top before the Time Cutoff. This year we had 33 Official Finishers arriving at the top before the Time Cutoff!! Congratulations to everyone who made it!!
Each person arriving at the top was given a Badge of Honor: an Official Breathless Agony 4 Pass Finisher's Refrigerator Magnet shown on the 4 Pass Web Page!! Way cool!!
A tip of the hat to the Veloce Santiago Team for their support of this most difficult ride ... there was a huge turnout this year and many, many Santiago Cyclists made it to THE TOP!! Congratulations!!
A HUGE THANKS to Wendy Reynolds and her dog Maggie ... it's not easy driving a loaded van up on these curvey roads!! Wendy was in charge of Rest Stop 2 at the Mill Creek Ranger Station and Rest Stop 4 at Onyx Summit. Wendy: you're just the best!!
We'd like to really thank Marty Breen who worked Rest Stop 1 in Beaumont and this Rest Stop 3 in Angeles Oaks. Marty just did a great job ... and is already looking forward to Breathless Agony 2002!! Marty flew up to Angeles Oaks in 1999 ... he was the First of the 3 Pass Finishers and a real leader to all of us youngsters as he was 56 years old then!!
We'd also like to really thank Jim Carter who helped Marty at Rest Stop 1 and 3 ... and drove his SUV as a SAG vehicle on the road. Jim is celebrating his 70th Birthday today, May 6, 2001 ... but you wouldn't know it: Jim road all 4 Passes to the top at Onyx Summit in 1999 and did 3 Passes in 2000. Then he came out and really gave us a big hand this year. Thanks, Jim: You're an inspiration to all of us youngsters!!

On September 10, two of my cycling friends and I (along with about 60 other riders) will depart San Diego on a cross-country tour, ultimately ending in Charleston, South Carolina. Our goal is to ride our bikes safely Across America, from sea to shining sea, a total of 3,117 Miles in 25 Days. We want to have fun seeing America up close while helping others along the way.
We will be documenting the trip on a series of web pages. Since we're taking a laptop and digital camera, a page for each day will be created during the course of the trip. The home page is already posted along with the basic framework of the pages for the first week.
After lots of heat training in July and August, we are looking forward to the challenging adventure to begin. There are many interesting things about this trip ... for example, we'll be staying in Cuba, Vienna, and two nights in Lebanon!!
Check out the web pages for much more information, maps, and photos.

- On the Bicycle Sales Page , made a large number of changes.
Totally reconstructed all links to bike manufacturer's web sites from the Bicycle Sales web page.
In the Trek Road Bikes section, updated the current information.
Added the following about the Trek 5900 Superlight: "During the off-season after his 1999 Tour de France win, Lance Armstrong spent long hours working with Trek's team of engineers. In their quest to find the lightest possible OCLV frame, they created OCLV 110. The new 5900 USPS Team Superlight will become the beneficiary of OCLV 110, or 110 grams of carbon fiber per square meter of material. The result is the lightest stock frame ever made at 2.2 lbs.
Additional weight is cut with the use of a one-piece OCLV Superlight fork, also constructed from OCLV 110. And to take it one step further, Trek saves an additional 60 grams on the frame by using a thin film of clear coat with a satin silver tint instead of paint. Let's just say Armstrong was attacking the Alps on the lightest bike possible during the 2000 Tour de France. This Trek 5900 Superlight ridden by Lance will be available after November, 2000.
Updated the information on Serotta Titanium Road Bikes.
Removed the sections about Holland Bikes and Santana Bikes that are no longer offerred at Santiago Cycling.
Added information about Burley Tandems including a new link to their web site. "If you like the feel of wind in your face, the thrill of a fast, smooth corner, and the perverse joy of bugs in your teeth, you'll be drawn to Burley's performance tandems. Whether you're passionate racers, weekend club riders, or world travelers, we offer an unparalleled line-up that will bring out the champion in you."
Totally rewrote the Mountain Bike section.

Next to each photo is a link to display the original larger photo. Once the original is displayed, you can save it to your computer by Right Clicking then selecting "Save Picture As".
There are no guarantees that digital photos will be available in future versions of the Breathless Agony -- but it was fun to do in 2000. Also, the higher resolution versions of the photos may be removed from the web server in the future if necessary to free up space.
At the end of the new photos are the results of the 3 Pass Finishers. Congratulations to these riders: Climbing 6,830 Feet in 46 Miles is awesome!!

A portion of the proceeds from this event were donated to the Jennifer and Jeffrey Rosenthal Trust Fund in memory of our fellow team mate, Steve Rosenthal.
While climbing the Torrey Pines Grade on the 1998 Amtrak Century Bike Ride, Steve suddenly passed away. He was active in Santiago's clinics, training rides on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, as well as Saturday and Sunday rides.
Steve was a soft spoken, giving, and a genuine nice guy with nothing but good things to say about everyone.
His sudden passing continues as a reminder to all of us to "number our days" because we never know how many more we have.

- On the Breathless Agony Ride Home Page, rewrote the Table of Contents and Links to be easier to understand. Before you had to go to the Ride Profile Page in order to get to the 1999 Photos. Now all of the links for all Breathless Agony associated pages are in one place, on the Breathless Agony Home Page. Makes sense to keep it simple. On this page, added a group of links for the 1999 Ride Report, Photos, and Results.
- Added a new page for the 1999 Breathless Agony Ride Report, Photos, and Results -- Beaumont to Oak Glen , which contains my Heart Rate Graph showing my Nuclear Meltdown graphically, my visitation by some dude with a sickle, my thoughts on Alp d'Huez, a great high speed Rollercoaster photo, and complete results of the 2 Pass Finishers.

- The 1999 Breathless Agony was a great day of cycling. The weather was the best yet: much better than the prior 2 years. We had a good turn out with 52 Riders Signed Up, considering that we were late getting the fliers out and that is "Southern California's Hardest Century." 24 were from Veloce Santiago and 28 were from other Teams and Clubs.
- We decided to time the event this year. Each Rest Stop had an Alphabetical List of Riders. With 52 Riders, who needs Rider Numbers? The clock stopped at the Last Rest Stop each Rider went to (Rest Stop 1 in Beaumont, Rest Stop 2 at the Ranger Station, Rest Stop 3 at Angeles Oaks, or Rest Stop 4 at Onyx Summit). There was no reason to race down the mountain since the clock stopped at the last Rest Stop each Rider made it to. I am working on the results which will show the time from the Start to each Rest Stop. There will be separate categories for men versus women. The results will include the age for the men but not for the women. We had 5 men in their 60's riding this year -- our hat is off to you young guys!!
- On the Breathless Agony Route Profile and Photos Page, added a Table of Contents area with a new link to a new Page for the 1999 Photos from the Start. Added a new and improved image of the Route Profile.
- Added a new page with 1999 Breathless Agony Photos from the Start, which contains my Ride Report and Photos up to the First Rest Stop in Beaumont. You may recognize many of the photos on this page but probably not the characters on the first shot! I am looking for your suggestions on all of this. Much more to follow. Barb Hill was taking some photos with a much better camera which I will be adding later.
- On the Team Photos Page, changed the date on the Women's Mountain Bike Photo from 1999 to 1998. Previously, it was a "Back to the Future" Time Warp thing. :)
