The road up to Onyx Summit has some steep ups and downs through Barton Flats followed by a long endless climb to Onyx Summit. However, there is really great scenery as you climb up and up above the clouds!! And did I mention THE PARTY at the top?

It was great fun to share the joy of these cyclists arriving at THE TOP!! These photos show how great of a time it was at the Onyx Summit Party this year!!

The COLD ARCTIC CHILL got colder in the fog bank of Barton Flats then warmed up a little as the riders climbed up above the clouds.

How cold was it?
Freezing cold:
At 11:40 A.M., it was 39 Degrees at Barton Flats.
At 11:45 A.M., it was 44 Degrees at Camp Morningstar.
At 11:52 A.M., it was 49 Degrees at The 7000 Feet Elevation Sign.
At 11:57 A.M., it was 47 Degrees at The 8000 Feet Elevation Sign.
At 11:59 A.M., it was 42 Degrees at Onyx Summit.
At 4:30 P.M., it was 46 Degrees at The 7000 Feet Elevation Sign.
At 4:40 P.M., it was 41 Degrees at Barton Flats and Foggy.
At 4:44 P.M., it was 40 Degrees at The 6000 Feet Elevation Sign.
At 4:48 P.M., it was 42 Degrees at Angelus Oaks where Rest Stop 3 was.
At 4:53 P.M., it was 46 Degrees at The 5000 Feet Elevation Sign.
At 5:00 P.M., it was 48 Degrees at the Forest Falls Turn.
At 5:07 P.M., it was 59 Degrees at the Ranger Station where Rest Stop 2 was.
At 5:20 P.M., it was 63 Degrees at Sylvan Park where the Lunch was.

For all of those awesome cyclists who made it all the way to Onyx Summit, they were mighty glad to have all of the cold weather gear that they brought!!

225 cyclists out of 263 starters accomplished an amazing feat by riding up above the fog and clouds all the way to Onyx Summit!! We were amazed that 85% of all who started made it to the top of Onyx Summit!! Each rider who made it was awarded a beautiful medal as you can see in the above photos.

The Onyx Summit Rest Stop Team was awesome with Clark Dicus, Kirby Brown, Crystal Nordenstam, Dr. Ron Koons, and Marty Breen. A REALLY BIG thanks to these folks who worked ALL DAY LONG to make this all happen!!

It has been verified that Scott McAfee set a new Course Record in a time of 5:03 this year!! We always wanted to know how fast a Pro could fly up this brutally hard course. Scott rode the Redlands Bike Classic as a Pro for 9 years and was a Cat 1 Racer in 1998. He has since retired from racing but we're most impressed with his ride on the 2005 Breathless Agony Century. We tip our hat to Scott!!

A new Tandem Course record has also been set this year. Dan and Briann Hoopes flew all the way up to Onyx Summit in a record breaking time of 6:14 shaving 51 minutes off the prior Tandem record!! Dan was a Cat 2 Racer and they sure make an incredible Tandem Team!! WOW!!

A Breathless Agony first was accomplished by Calvin Mulder who rode his Fixed Gear bike from the Start to Onyx Summit in 6:13!! Calvin was the first rider to complete the 4 Passes on a Fixed Gear Bike. His gear ratio was a 42x16 and he said that he didn't stand at all!!
